G W Davis Grocery Store, Arcola NC

Image
One of the many old country stores located in Warren County, NC. This one is located in Arcola. An outstanding feature of G W Davis Grocery Store is the Coca-Cola "ghost sign" painted on the side of the building. These murals are known as "ghost signs" by enthusiasts because of the fading that has taken place over time. Many artists across the country are using their skills to restore these "ghost signs" to their former glory.

A Little Bird in Trouble

Image
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold, the bird froze and fell to the ground and landed in a large field While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it.  As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was.  The dung was actually thawing him out!  He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.  Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him! The morals of this story: 1)  Not everyone who drops crap on you is your enemy. 2)  Not everyone who gets you out of crap is your friend. 3)  And when you're in deep crap, keep your mouth shut.

The Moon

Image
Thy beauty haunts me heart and soul, Oh, thou fair Moon, so close and bright; Thy beauty makes me like the child That cries aloud to own thy light: The little child that lifts each arm To press thee to her bosom warm. Though there are birds that sing this night With thy white beams across their throats, Let my deep silence speak for me More than for them their sweetest notes: Who worships thee till music fails, Is greater than thy nightingales.  William Henry Davies

The Giant Legs of Henderson, NC

Image
Crass, rude, vulgar, horrible, indecent, shocking, nasty! Only a few of the adjectives that has described the legs in Henderson, NC. I got to see them today after hearing about them about a year ago. The legs are spread in the missionary position on one side of the street and her shoes are on the other side. A form of art, these legs were constructed around 2001 out of concrete, weighing 40 tons and 17 feet tall by Ricky Pearce. Said to be inspired by a picture of Marilyn Monroe, Mr. Pearce, a backhoe contractor, said he felt that the legs were an improvement to the neighborhood, although those sentiments may not be shared by all of his neighbors. Above the shoes he fashioned a metal arch with the words "High NC Heels". Another arch is erected with the words "Reminiscing" in front of the legs. He didn't understand what the fuss was about. There is nothing that the county could do about it because it did not violate any zoning
