Hester Store and The Depot, Warren Plains, Warren County NC
I pass these structures quite frequently and thought they were good to capture in photos. Warren Plains was a thriving small town because of the railroad. The Depot was constructed in 1863 for the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad. It is made of cypress wood. The Depot, as it is called, holds a place in NC and the nation's history. Civil War General Robert E Lee reportedly presented a speech from the depot's porch before traveling to the area of Warrenton to visit the grave of his daughter, Annie Carter Lee.
Hester Store, one of the 3 standalone stores that stood parallel to the depot and the track line, is the only one of the 3 stores remaining. Owned and operated by George Washington Hester (1869-1931) and his wife Elizabeth A Hester (1879-1938), it became a tenant house after their deaths.
